Overview

Preside (The App) is a mobile email application made in Santa Cruz California by GoodHumans ("Preside", "us", "we", "our"). We respect your privacy. By default, the app does not communicate any personal information to our servers, and the app functions quite well without enabling any of the features that require such transmission.

Collection and Use of Personal Information

The App collects personal and account information necessary to perform its functions. This information resides on your device, and it is generally not transmitted to our servers. Some opt-in features do require the transmition of email content to external servers. These features are clearly demarcated, and they are not central to the functionality of the app. In other words, you can choose not to use these features after you are presented with a privacy warning when they are invoked. A list of these features and their respective privacy implications follows:

  • Preside.io accounts When you register for a Preside.io account (which is required for a Premium subscription or remote notifications), we collect an email address as a login identifier. Additionally, we use that email address to communicate with you, when necessary.
  • Remote notifications If you enable remote notifications in the app, we must collect information about your device in order to send those notifications. Also, the nature of these notifications is that your email data will pass through our servers during the notification process. Like all requests going through our servers, that data is recorded into log files. We do not perform any analysis or analytics of that data. Since those notifications are coming from your computer, you have full control over what gets sent. You can choose to send a notification such as, "You've got mail", or you can choose to use one of the local notification facilities that do not require communication with our servers.
  • Remote monitoring When you enable the 'Remote monitoring' feature, we make use of a 3rd party service, Context.io, in order to provide this service. That service is provided with full access to your email accounts and email data. We've included more information about how that information is collected and used in the next section of this document.
  • Speaking emails Speech synthesis is provided by iSpeech. Any time you choose to have the email spoken to you, the contents of that email are transmitted to the iSpeech server for speech synthesis. This feature is clearly demarcated and you have the opportunity to decline to use this feature before transmission. Once the email is transmitted for synthesis, we have no control over how that data is used, but you can read about their privacy policy at: http://www.ispeech.org/policies.php
  • Support emails When you email support, you usually provide us with your name & email address. That information is stored in our support database. We use that information to improve the app and your ability to use the app.

Context.io and Personal Information

When you enable the 'Remote syncing (preside.io servers)' feature in The App, information about your email accounts is sent to our servers and we relay that information to Context.io. We do not store any of our information on our own servers, but Context.io stores that information in order to monitor your Inboxes for new emails. They also collect information from the emails on your servers and monetize that information in accordance with their own privacy policy at: http://returnpath.com/data-privacy-policy/.

When you make use of this remote monitoring feature, The App uses features enabled by Context.IO. By using this application, you agree to share your information with third parties, including DokDok, Inc., its parent company, Return Path, Inc. and their affiliates (collectively "Context.IO Providers"), who provide the Context.IO services upon which we rely. By granting permission upon sign up or using the application, you acknowledge and agree that Context.IO Providers may access your personally identifiable information ("PII"). Your PII includes, but is not limited to, your name, email address, and authentication credentials. Context.IO Providers may use your PII to provide services and products requested by you and to enable its vendors and contractors to provide and assist in the provision of such services and products to you. If you wish to opt out of sharing your information with Context.IO Providers, you may do so by going to https://optout.context.io/.

You can opt out of this collection of data by disabling the 'Remote monitoring' function in the app. At that time, The App will delete your account information from the Context.io servers, to the best of our ability. It is probably a good idea to change your email passwords at that time too.

Collection and Use of Non-Personal Information

The App collects non-personal information − data in a form that does not permit direct association with any specific individual. It may collect, use, transfer, and disclose non-personal information for any purpose. The following are some examples of non-personal information that is collected and how we may use it:

We may collect information such as occupation, language, zip code, area code, unique device identifier, location, and the time zone where App is used so that we can better understand customer behavior and improve our products, services, and advertising. We also collect information regarding activities in the Ad-Supported App. This information is aggregated and used to help us provide more useful information to our customers and to understand which parts of the App and services are of most interest. Aggregated data is considered non-personal information for the purposes of this Privacy Policy. If we do combine non-personal information with personal information the combined information will be treated as personal information for as long as it remains combined.

You can opt out of this type of data collection by modifying the 'Data collection' preference on the Behaviors Preferences screen.
